Mr Hippy's handmade Winter Solstice Gift - Mixed Media on Portwrinkle Rock

Aurora Borealis painted on to rock using Stampin' Up! supplies and acrylic paints.

Happy Solstice!
If you're wondering what you're looking at, it's Mr Hippy's Winter Solstice gift from me - it's a mixed media, hand-painted/created rock featuring some fir trees and the Aurora Borealis.

We always exchange one gift (mine are usually handmade) on the Solstice, and we take great pleasure in celebrating the returning light.

A rock doesn't sound like much of a gift, but it is a really special rock - it's from the beach where his Dad lived, where he spent lots of time as a child, and where we have spent many, many happy times together.

We lost both his mum and dad last year, so I wanted to come up with something really thoughtful. On the back is my very personal message - a reminder that we're all made of star dust, and that his parents are still with us, shining down from a twinkly sky...

The message on the back of the Aurora Borealis Winter Solstice rock

I used a mixture of mediums to create this - Stampin' Up! Inks, Stamping Sponges, a Basic Black markerHeat Tool, Fine Tip Glue Pen,Whisper White Craft Stampin' Ink Refill, Dazzling Diamonds Stampin' Glitter and some acrylic paint.

You can see it twinkle in the very short video below:

I had made another one previously and lacquered it... I wasn't sure on the effect but turns out he likes it just as much (so now he has two!). This was my first attempt:

Mixed Media painting on rock number 3 - try this technique at home using a mixture of Stampin' Up! products and acrylic paint.

I love handmade gifts, they are so special and often carry such special meanings. Now I'm wracking my brains (already!) to think what to make him for next year.

A Blessed Solstice to you all! And have a very Merry Christmas,
